The power of your words

I couldn’t find the source to where this acronym came from, but it’s a great reminder to all of us.

My sister had it hung on her fridge a few years back and I loved it. I also loved that this is what she was teaching her young kids.

My dad used to say to me years ago - Kristi, think before you talk! Haha, well Dad, I finally got the message. (We all finally ‘get’ it at some point, so don’t be hard on yourself). 😊

T - is it TRUE?
So often when we talk we think we are right. Give some thought to whether this is just your opinion or someone else’s.

H - is it HELPFUL?

I - is it INSPIRING?

N - is it NECESSARY?

K - is it KIND?

What else came to me is a book I read years ago - “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. The first agreement is, be impeccable with your word.

Why I believe this is so important is because words go into our minds and the ones with a lot of power can often become ‘played on repeat.’

Think about what you replay and who said it to you. The who doesn’t matter - the words matter, whether you believe it or not and if you are still replaying it.

Sometimes, before meeting someone new, someone else may give you their 2 cents about them. Now you go into that with a preconceived notion of who they are. You carry someone else’s word with you.

So today, try to be conscious of what words you are hearing yourself say, pause and question if it was someone not following this acronym.

More importantly, be conscious of the words you speak, since we can’t control others. The impact of your word matters because you are powerful and what you say has power.

Before I say heated words or want to give my opinion, I ask myself - when this person replays what I have said to them in their mind, is it a thought I want to attach myself to, or will they be hurt thinking about it (me).

Plus, you know you don’t feel good when you use words to hurt. But sometimes we aren’t conscious and go off old behaviors or what we were taught. This can change though. First step is the desire to be better and the willingness to take a baby step towards becoming aware of the words you speak.

I think the nicer we are, the better we will all feel.

Cheers to you and all you are and willing to become. 😘

Love always,

Kristi
