Hello there!
Phew, last one! How’s it going so far? Have you been reminding yourself about these on a daily basis? When we re-program, it is essential to use repetition to upgrade our old thoughts to new thoughts.
The book is The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.
Agreement ONE: BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD
Agreement TWO: DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY
Agreement THREE: DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS
Agreement FOUR: ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST
Why do this? You’ll feel better. It sets you free.
The challenge here is what happens when you’re tired? Or sick? Your best will depend on your everyday moods. And if you keep to these agreements, your best will be better a year from now, than it will be tomorrow.
Just do your best from where you are. Doing more depletes you and in doing less you’ll self punish with guilt and blame. You are not here to sacrifice joy or life. You’re here to live, be happy and to love.
This is about action. Think Forrest Gump, Don says. “When you don’t do your best you are denying yourself the right to be you.” So it’s ok if you still make assumptions, still take things personally and not be impeccable with your word. If you’re doing your best, you’ll still feel good because you’ll be getting better with time. By doing your best, you become a master. You learn by repetition. Practice.
This is how you control your life. The Four Agreements is pretty simple stuff. It takes a while though, take it from me!
“It takes being present with a strong will with a warrior desire for happiness and freedom. Many want this result. You’ll need the fortitude to transcend your suffering from all the obstacles on your path.”
Freedom just means to be who you really are. Who can you blame for not being you? That’s being a victim. Have you ever thought of the real you as a little child who never grew up? When you are in play, yes. Then you have to be responsible. And serious. Be aware that you’re not free when you are living separated from the real you.
I know what my best is, as do you. When I come up short, I don’t feel as good. So be conscious of where you’re at so that you can make better decisions. If you’re not ‘at your best’ contemplate it. Why not? Do you need rest? Need to clean up your clutter? Need more fun in your life? Have you gotten too serious?
Honor your state, and then just do your best.
Thank you for being with me, and I hope these agreements become natural for you as you practice them. You’re doing great. Big hug to you.
All my love,
Kristi 💜
