How well do you listen?

Hey there,

You know listening is a valuable skill and you know we could all do better!

Of course being a coach, I have a lot of opportunities to practice this skill - and it really matters. But I also realize it matters to anyone I’m with, not just paying clients.

So as I practice (daily) sharpening this skill (and I’ve come a long way), I decided I was going to try something new. I was invited to an intimate corporate party held at an office downtown. I decided that I was going to listen more than talk. Seriously - if I’m not intentional about it, I can go back to old habits and the opposite is true.

It’s a gift to be able to talk to anyone in the room, so I’m grateful for my gift of gab - but I learn more by listening and I love to learn.

Well, I learned very interesting things about a variety of interesting people. Relationship challenges, what a daughter is going through, vacation experiences, a new side business, a covid online relationship that turned into marriage and someone who witnessed a big personality change from a father in law. (Some would say it took him too long, but he stood up for his transformation).

I woke up the next morning and felt really good (other than a little headache from the nonstop wine). I did what I set out to do. It made me realize how little we actually know about people and how easily we can remain in small talk. With a few good questions, people are very willing to share. And share they did!

This week, maybe be curious about others and ask one little deeper question. And then listen. Without interrupting and thinking about what you will say next. Stay present and make it about them. But fill your glass because they have a lot to say when they’re being heard!

💜

Your friend,

Kristi

Throughout my 20+ years of studying and learning to love and accept myself - no matter what, I have come to realize that there is no ‘right’ path or way to experience life, other than head on, with accountability, a sense of humor and lightness, and a knowing that only I can create my own reality. And this is true for everyone. You create your own reality. Let me help you get to yours!
