Got anxiety?
Hey there!
I recently listened to the podcast: ManTalks - Motivation, Anxiety and the Science of Stuck with Britt Frank. I’ve listened to her before and absolutely recommend her if you have issues with anxiety. She’s quick and knows her stuff!
Here’s my summary if you can’t find the time to listen to the full episode.
Anxiety is not a thinking problem, it’s a body problem.
Anxiety is the check engine light in your brain. The function of anxiety is to simply let you know that something is not working. It is notifying you that your brain is unsafe.
Don’t start with trying to understand ‘why’ this is happening. If you try to figure out why, you’ll feel worse and it’ll keep you stuck. You can figure this out later. Instead, begin with 3 people, places or things that will help you feel a little less in danger. This gets the nervous system back online.
Here are 2 myths of anxiety:
It’s bad - Yes, it’s uncomfortable, but it is needed.
You can talk your way out of it - mindset is great in many areas but not this one! That would be like ‘willing’ your car not to be out of gas. You can’t ‘think’ or ‘affirm’ your way out of a physiological nervous system response.
Ask yourself:
Am I in danger in my environment?
What do I feel in my body? (clenched jaw, sweaty palms, tight chest?)
What are my choices for people, places and things?
