Can you handle the truth?

Hello!

I’m a person of honesty and truth. Not always a great messenger of it, but working on it!

Dr. Jordan Peterson often says, “tell the truth” or at least, “don’t lie.” I like that.

There’s a difference between being brutally honest and speaking your truth. The former can be abrupt and may lack compassion in your delivery. This will easily cause defensiveness in the other. I know this from experience. Heck, you probably do too by now. ;)

I believe, without the truth we won’t ever be able to know the actual situation we’re in. If someone isn’t honest, it’s an unfair game and you can’t ever create a real win-win.

Telling the truth requires knowing yourself. It takes courage and confidence. Lean into it.

Steve Harvey says that a man will often lie to their woman because they’re afraid of her reaction to the truth. Alison Armstrong also teaches that women teach men to lie. You can desire honesty in someone, but how do you react when they are? (video link below).

Remember in A Few Good Men, when Jack Nicholson yells to Tom Cruise, “You can’t handle the truth.” It was powerful because it made people think. (link below)

So often, we tiptoe around the truth thinking we don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. But I can bet, that’s a wormhole you don’t want to go down. Where and when does it end? People CAN handle the truth. And who are you to decide this for them?

People aren’t weak. Lies are what hurt. The truth is the only place you can work from. With truth, there are opportunities for growth. Accountability, communication, forgiveness, intimacy and trust.

How do you know your truth?
How do you tell the truth?
How do you receive the truth?

These are questions that will require some time to sort out. Take that time and build healthy honest relationships. (Or don’t, depends on your values for sure).

How nice is it, to think of that person you can count on to always tell you the truth? Be that person. It’s also where you’ll find more freedom.

Of course, you don’t have to do any of this. I just know for me, I love the truth. It helps me go deep, to know what’s real, and to really learn about another. And that’s probably because connection is one of my 2 highest values. As always though - YOU DO YOU! 😘

I did a previous inSight about speaking your truth a while back, if you want to read it:

I am an energetic gal who is captivated by the human condition. I believe in exploring all life experiences to learn and grow. Throughout my 20+ years of studying and learning to love and accept myself - no matter what, I have come to realize that there is no ‘right’ path or way to experience life, other than head on, with accountability, a sense of humor and lightness, and a knowing that only I can create my own reality. And this is true for everyone. You create your own reality. Let me help you get to yours!
